Down To Mexico

Down To Mexico

From the Album As In Those Early Days

Down the coast to the borderline
Seven children close behind
Heading south to the womb
Time of drought, in need of food

“Don’t be scared,” she said to her son
“There will be better days yet to come.”
When the train began to shout
She held her breath while heading south

Down to Mexico

With each mile her memory did run
Back to the place where she was born so very young
Grandpa’ praying with such humility
Hand behind the plow a life of simplicity

Down to Mexico

“Tell me Momma how far have we strayed
Into doubt; I no longer know how to pray.”
“All must suffer.” the Priest he spoke
Deep inside he, too, had lost all hope

Down to Mexico

Tierra Madre trembling at her core
”Momma please don’t take us back north anymore.”
When the train came to a stop
Again, at last, she felt at peace with her own thoughts
