Flower On a Rocky Plain
Unpublished
Your love is like a flower
That grows wild on a rocky plain
When I’m hungry you provide
When I’m in thirst you bring the rain
I can feel you in the morning
Even when the sun don’t shine
When I lay beneath your kindness
And gaze up into your eyes
I see a father’s eyes a-smiling
Watching the birth of his first son
Holding the hands of his woman
Assuring her of his love
In a small town in Minnesota
On a dirt road on Sunday
A small child waving to a hobo
While counting the boxcars on a train
Like a stream flowing from the Sierra’s
Down to the valley floor
Men have tried to bribe me into thinking
I’d never see you anymore
But your love cannot be bought
Nor be made a mockery of
It’s stronger than the mighty dollar
As sure as the stars above.
I can feel you in the barroom
In the eyes of those old men
Who talk about their misfortunes
Still proud of where they’ve been
Like the wind that blows so freely
Across these rocky plains
Your love can heal the sick and needy
And bring comfort to those in pain
