Decoration Day

Decoration Day

Azaleas, buttercups
grow wild in the holler.
The dogwoods bloom.
Birds sing a tune
for their mothers and fathers
who’ve come and gone.
Now in a song
we sing together.
A song of love,
a song of thanks
that will live on forever

Decoration Day.
Lord, may you help us
through this season.
Decoration Day.
Lord, I pray for you
to give us reason.

White marble chips
with red ferns
grow beside the headstones.
Memories
of families
who now have no loved ones.
In decay
these old graves
like people
get so lonely.
We need someone
to bring back
the beauty of the garden.

Decoration Day.
Lord, may you help us
through this season.
Decoration Day.
Lord, I pray for you
to give us reason.
