Bethel Mission
Unpublished
Through the doorway of the mission, where the gospel
Hymns are sung to the taste of Christian wine
Some were lawyers, others doctors, now all broken
Now all sharing the same loss, the loss of pride
Christ our Savior is looking down upon us
From a painting on the wall done years ago
By a man who came one night to the mission
From where he came no one does know
In a dark and empty room three men sleeping
While the sun shines so bright through the door
Of the chapel, two men reading the morning paper
Both were soldiers in the Korean War
Christ our Savior is looking down upon us
From a painting on the wall done years ago
By a man who came one night to the mission
What was his name, no one does know
In a large and empty room three men standing
Staring down at the food yet to come
All that’s heard is the silence that surrounds them
Blest are those who still know the pain of love
Christ our Savior is looking down upon us
From a painting on the wall done years ago
By a man who came one night to the mission
The Last Supper he painted on the wall
